 5. Practice Rounding to 100 with "Close To 100" Game.

Materials
     One deck of Numeral Cards
Close to 100 Score Sheet for each player
Players: 1, 2, or 3
How to Play
1. Deal out six Numeral Cards to each player.
2. Use any four cards to make two numbers. For example, a 6 and a 5 could make either 56 or 65. Wild Cards can be used as any numeral. Try to make numbers that, when added, give you a total close to 100.
3. Write these numbers and their total on the Close to 100 Score Sheet. For example: 42 + 56 = 98.
4. Find your score. Your score is the difference between your total and 100. For example, if your total is 98, your score is 2. If your total is 105, your score is 5.
5. Put the cards you used in a discard pile. Keep the two cards you didn't use for the next round.
6. For the next round, deal four new cards to each player. Make more numbers that come close to 100. When you run out of cards, mix up the discard pile and use those cards again.
7. Five rounds make one game. Total your scores for the five rounds. Lowest score wins!
Scoring Variation
Write the score with minus and plus signs to show the direction of your total away from 100. For example: If your total is 98, your score is -2. If your total is 105, your score is +5. The total of these two scores would be +3. Your goal is to get a total score for five rounds that is close to 0.

Estimating Money
Unit 1: Lesson 1.5 cont'd.
Vocabulary:
1. Commutative Property of Addition: You can add two numbers in any order.
            3 + 4 = 4 + 3        or             3 + 4 + 5 = 4 + 3 + 5

2. Associative Property of Addition : You can change the grouping of numbers you add.
            1 + ( 2 + 3)  =  (1 + 2) + 3

3.  Identity Property of Addition: The sum of any number and zero is that same number.
            3 + 0 + 3                199 + 0 = 199

4. Break Apart Strategy: Break apart a number to make a ten.
            23 + 15
        ( 20 + 3 ) + (10 + 5)
        (20 + 10) +  ( 3 + 5 )
            30     +     8
                    38
5. Sum : the answer to addition problems.  4 + 5 = the sum is 9

6. Addends: the numbers that are added. 4 + 5 = 9 The addends are 4 and 5.

Activity 1:
Materials: Play Money, quarters, dimes and pennies
Select coins to illustrate 24 cents and 45 cents. What is the total? Use mental math.
Think: 24 cents is close to 25 cents.
Is there a quarter in 45 cents?
  Think: 25  25   10 10   - take 1 cent away
( What is 1 cent less than 70 cents?)

Activity 2:
                    $0.99      $1.49
You are walking through a store and you choose two items that cost the aboe prices. You want to make sure you have enough money to ay for them.  Since yo don't have paper and pencil, how can you figure out mentally?
How much do you think you need?
What is your estimate of the total money needed? Figure it out mentally. What strategy did you use to figure that out?  Write down your strategy.

Activity 3:
                $1.79 and $0.74
How much money do you need to buy these items? First find a quick estimate with mental math. Then use paper and pencil to check.

Activity 4:

Break Apart these numbers into tens. Add them mentally.
  54 + 29                    27 + 12

                34 + 25                    34 + 25

Rounding: replacing a number with a umber that tells about how much or how many.

Activity 1:

Yesterday I went to the store and bought three things that totaled a dollar? What could have been the cost of eachof the three items? Estimate mentally first. Then use your calculator to find the total?

             $4.83         $24.39            $56.28

Why does the calculator show 85.5 ?

Sadie and I went to the store to buy some doggie treats. We decided to get two different kinds of treats and one squeaky toy. This is what the items cost:  $3.55        $2.99        5.01.  What was the sum of all of the items?
Estimate mentally first, then check with the calculator.

Try these problems on the calculator:

40 cents + 20 cents

$6.89 + 11 cents

Remediation for Addition and Subtraction Touch Points math can be used when adding long lists of numbers.

Activity 3:  Touch Points math is an easy way to accurately add or subtract numbers in columns. The following website gives very basic information. It links to another site which  shows what the touch points look like on numbers. This site has a picture of the touch point numbers. Scroll down. It's easy to make your own for display. When adding a group of numbers start with the largest number first and count up touching the points on the numbers. The places that are circled are to be touched twice.  Example: 8 + 9 =  Say the number 9, then touch the points on 8. Remember to touch the circled points twice:  9 --10, 11 ---12,13,--14,15---16, 17.  The answer is 17.
There are four dots on 8. They are circled         1                   2             3               4
When subtracting,  say the largest number and countbackwards on the number you are subtracting from it.
Ex. 17 - 9      17, then start touching the points on the 9  and say this: 16,15,   14,13,   12,11   ,10,9,    8  . The answer is 8.
