Unit 3
Enduring Understandings
-Change in one variable can cause a change in a second variable.
-Data analysis often reveals patterns and enables prediction
-Choice of data representation depends on purpose of communication and characteristics of data collected
-A numerical picture can be created using measurable data
-Organizing information enables inferencing, decision-making and justification of thoughts .
Essential Questions

-How do we use graphs and graphic organizers to convey realistic data?
-How can we show patterns and relationships between data using graphic organizers?
-How does the type of data influence the choice of graph?
-What kinds of questions can be answered using different data displays?
-In what ways can sets of data be organized in an understandable form?
-How can functions be represented through graphic organizers?

Line Plots
pg. 206-207

Line Plot - displays data along a number line.

In this graph the majority students (6) have 1 pet. Five students don't have a pet. One student has 14 pets! Wow!

"A line plot or a number-line plot is used to show one kind of information or data. A line plot is a kind of pictograph in which the vertical scale shows the frequency of an event or occurrence. A line plot makes it easy to see which is the greatest number and least number in a collection of data. It also shows us which number occurred most often, or the mode. Outlier -A number in a data set that is very different from the other numbers.
The median is the middle number when the data are listed in order.
The number of raisins in our boxes:
10, 26, 26, 27, 30, 32, 32, 32, 34
                        x
30 is the median.
The mode is the number or numbers that occur most often in the data.
10, 26, 26, 27, 30, 32, 32, 32, 34.  The mode is 32.

The range is the difference between the greatest and the least number in the data.
10, 26, 26, 27, 30, 32, 32, 32, 34
The greatest number is 34. The least number is 10.
34 – 10 = 24. The range is 24.

The mean is the average. It is found by adding all the numbers in a set and dividing by the number of values.
10, 25, 20, 5, 20
The sum is 75.
 We added 5 numbers.
Divide 75 by 5.
The average or mean is 15.

A bar graph uses bars to show data.

Every bar graph must have a title, a scale, and an interval.

Numbers that show the units used on a graph are the scale.

The interval is the way the numbers are counted on the scale. Sometimes the interval is counting by ones, sometimes by two's , sometimes by 5's, sometimes by 10's, etc.
Bar graphs can be vertical or horizontal.

    How do pictographs display data?
Pieces of information collected are called data.
A pictograph uses pictures or symbols to show data.
The key tells what quantity each symbol represents.
Notice that the star key stands for 2 different amounts.

-A line graph connects points to show how data changes over time.
-In a line graph, when the line goes up from left to right, there is an increase in the data.
-When the line goes down, there is a decrease.
-The increase or decrease indicates the trend in the data.

Each part of a line graph has a purpose. Look at the line graph below.line graph
Daily high temperatures for one week

The title of the graph tells what it's about.
The labels on the bottom and the side of the graph tell what kinds of facts
    had been gathered.
The scales along the bottom and side tell how much or how many.
The points, or dots, tell the facts.
The lines connecting the points give estimated values about the line graph.

    - Game: For this activity each student needs a sheet of 4 different colors of contstruction paper. Fold the first in half and cut it into 2 pieces. Label each as half. Fold the second into fourths and cut. Label each piece as 1/4. Fold the third into eighths and cut. Label each as 1/8. Students try to cover the "whole fraction sheet" with smaller pieces as a fraction die is thrown. First one to cover the sheet wins.

A game is considered fair if each player has an equal chance of winning.

Suppose we were playing a game that used a number cube. If I got a point every time an even number was rolled and you got a point every time an odd number was rolled, the game would be considered fair.

An event is something that may happen. Sometimes, we are certain that an event will occur.
    Sometimes, we know it is impossible;
and sometimes, we just aren’t sure.

    Certain (The sun will rise.)
    Impossible (Frogs will talk.)
Likelyto happen (We will have rain next month.)
Unlikely to happen (I will not watch TV for a year.)
Equally likely to happen or not to happen (If I pick a card from a deck of cards, it will be red.)Probability is the likelihood that something may happen.

Instead of just saying something is likely to happen, we can use numbers from 0 to 1 to describe probability.

Probability is always shown as a number from 0 to 1. If the probability of an event happening is 0, the event is impossible.

    Impossible Event:

(Today is Sunday, so tomorrow will be Thursday.)Write 0 as a decimal? 0.0 or 0 %

If the probability of an event is 1, then we know the event will happen.

What is an event that has a probability of 1? (A triangle will always have3 sides.)  How could you write this answer as a decimal? (1.0) Sometimes you will hear the weather announcer say that the probability of rain today is 100%. That prediction means that the announcer is certain that it will rain.

The probability of an event that is certain to happen can bewritten as 1, 1.0, or 100%.

Write whether each event is certain, likely, unlikely, or impossible.
