Games/Center
| Day
1
TLW identify mixed numbers and improper fractions. Whole Group: 1. Fraction Video Introduction: Understanding What Fractions Are 2. Hershey's Hands On Activity: Pass out Hersey Bars to group: (worksheet 2 pages). Each member will get the same number of bars in the grop. There are 12 bars per bar, so each piece is a twelfth. They will write fractions to show how many each member has. See handout. Complete the chart on construction paper. 3. Review the flip chart: Fractions are greater than one: http://www.prometheanplanet.com/server.php?show=ConResource.9750 Small

Adding/Subtracting
Fractions with Unlike Denominators
Objectives
1. TLW review adding
and subtracting fractions with different denominators.
2. TLW use customary
units to measure length.
3. TLW use customary
units to measure capacity/weight.
Monday
1. Review the definitions
of multiples, common multiples, greatest common multiple for finding common
denominators. Tell the definition, tell when you can use it(adding diff.
denom), or give an example. Students make a poster, a power point
or a video to demonstrate the concept. (1 group video, 1 group ppt)
2. Review factors,
common factors, and greatest common factor for simplifying. 2 groups of
students work to create power point and video. ( 1 group video, 1 group
ppt)Video/ppts can be placed on website for test review.
3. Practice if not
using the above activity is text pg. 580 or P10-5 ; text pg. 586-587.
Homework: Study for
a test on adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators.(text
pg. 568-580)
Tuesday
1. Weekly Quiz
2. Math Art:Since
we have used fraction bars to create pictures, fractions to create ice
cream sundaes, have students use some other item to use for art to demonstrate
and label fractions. (ex: a picture of an m & m cookie with
colored m& m’s – label the fraction of each color; an ice cream
cone with favorite ice creams; a flower bouquet for mother’s day with different
types of flowers; a picture frame with different sports balls drawn on
the inside ¾ basketballs, ¼ tennis balls, ¼
footballs.)
Objectives
Adding Fractions with Unlike Denominators:
Wednesday: Linear Measurement
1. The following interactive
website will be used to introduce the unit of measurements: http://www.linkslearning.org/Kids/1_Math/2_Illustrated_Lessons/2_Estimation_of_Length/index.html
2. Discuss or make
a list of when exact measurements are needed and when estimates are ok.
3. Practice reading
a ruler to measure with this interactive activity of measuring a teddy
bear: http://www.apples4theteacher.com/measure.html
4. Stations:
Station 1: Teacher:
practice with ruler; text pg. 589-91.

Station 3
Students will work
in groups of 4 to trace around the body of one student in the group on
to chart paper. Students will take turns measuring the length and width
of arms and legs, head and feet. Record amounts neatly on the arms, legs,
head, feet using the LEAP rulers and measuring to the nearest quarter inch.
Homework: Text pg.
589; pg. 591.
Bring examples
of containers that show capacity: cup, fluid ounces, tablespoons; pints,
quarts, gallons.
Thursday:
Capacity
1. Check pg. 589 and
591. Review concepts.
2. Introduce Capacity
with this interactive video: http://www.linkslearning.org/Kids/1_Math/2_Illustrated_Lessons/6_Weight_and_Capacity/index.html
3. Introduce cups,
pints, quarts: http://www.eduplace.com/cgi-bin/schtemplate.cgi?template=/kids/mw/help/eh_popup.thtml&grade=1&chapter=18&lesson=2&title=Cups,
+Pints,+and+Quarts&tm=tmfb1802e
4. Discuss capacity
and directions on pg. 592-593 in text.
(Gallon Man PPT and
worksheet can be added to this activity.

5. Stations: (Copy
the station worksheet)
Station 1: Measure
the length of various objects in the center: straws of different lengths,
ribbon of different lengths, crayons. Record.
Station 2: Look at
the capacity of the various containers and place them in order from smallest
to greatest. (Hint: put containers with similar measures in the groups.)
Station 3: Have a
large container of rice and several other size containers that need to
be filled. The containers should range in size from small to large. Students
must decide on the appropriate measuring tool to load the rice into the
containers: teaspoon, tablespoon, ¼ cup, ½ cup, etc.
Station 4: Teacher/
text pg. 592-93
Station 5: Computer
Homework: Finish pg.
592-593.
Station 4: Put together

it? (large bowl of rice, empty containers to fill: baggie, cans, tsp, tbsp,
¼ cup, ½ cup, cup..)
Monday
1. Materials
needed: about four candy bars for each group. The candy should be different
sizes and types. Also needed are rulers for each group. (Babe Ruth, Mars,
Milky Way, Snickers…)
2. Review
measuring with centimeters: http://www.hbschool.com/activity/length_strength1_centi/
3. Students
will work in groups to complete the following tasks to help review for
linear measurement for the test.
Station
1: Measure each candy bar in your group. Determine its length, width,
and height to the nearest centimeter. Determine the volume of each candy
bar by multiplying length x width x height.
Station
2: List the ingredients in each candy bar. Compare and contrast the
ingredients of the candy bars in your group. Place the ingredients on the
double bubble map.
Station
3: Choose one member of your group to visit the other groups and make
a tally of all the different candy bars. When this statistician returns
with the information, make a bar graph to show the data.
Station
4: Use all of the candy bar names in a creative group short story.
For example:
Babe Ruth was left behind when everyone went to Mars on a spaceship.
As they traveled through the Milky Way, they heard the Snickers of….
Tuesday
1. Finish
group work as needed.
2. Changing
units and comparing measures – text pg. 596 -597
Show
students how to set up ratios to solve these problems
Ex.
4 Tons = _______ lbs.
4
Tons = _____lbs 1 times what = 5280 ? Do the
same to the top
1 Ton
= 5280 lbs. just as we did when
making equal fractions.
Example
2: 2 yds and 1 ft = _____ feet
1 yard
= 3 feet 1 x what = 3 do the same to the top
